Why We Celebrate Women’s Day
Women’s Day in South Africa, observed on 9th August, commemorates the historic 1956 march when over 20,000 women protested against the country’s pass laws. It’s a powerful reminder of women’s courage, unity, and enduring contribution to freedom and justice. At St Luke’s Church, we honour this legacy by celebrating the women in our community and recommitting ourselves to the values of empowerment, inclusion, and spiritual growth.
St Luke’s: A Community Rooted in Resilience and Unity
Our Story
Founded in 1897, St Luke’s Anglican Church is a vibrant, evangelical, and charismatic community in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Our history is one of overcoming adversity-whether it was the forced removals during apartheid or the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, women have played a central role in rebuilding, nurturing, and leading our congregation.
Diversity and Inclusion
Our church family reflects the rich tapestry of South Africa. Once a congregation mainly of “coloured” people, St Luke’s now embraces members from all backgrounds and nationalities. We are committed to fostering unity and celebrating diversity for the glory of God’s Kingdom.
Women at the Heart of Ministry
Past and Present Leadership
From the early days of the Women’s Guild to today’s lay leaders, women have been instrumental in shaping our ministries. They serve as worship leaders, pastoral caregivers, teachers, and community organisers. Their faith, compassion, and resilience continue to inspire and uplift our church.
Empowering the Next Generation
We are actively rebuilding our Children’s and Youth Ministries, with a special focus on nurturing young girls and empowering them to become confident leaders in faith and society. Our programmes encourage participation, mentorship, and spiritual growth for all.
