Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day or Fat Tuesday, is a joyful tradition at St. Luke’s Church, Diep River. This special day marks the final celebration before the reflective season of Lent begins. It’s a time for community, delicious food, and preparing our hearts for the journey ahead.
What is Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday is rooted in the old practice of using up rich foods like eggs, milk, and butter before the fasting and simplicity of Lent. The word “shrove” comes from “shrive,” meaning to confess and receive forgiveness, making it both a festive and spiritual occasion.
Pancake Supper at St. Luke’s
At St. Luke’s, we gather in the parish hall for a traditional pancake supper, complete with pancakes, sausages, and sometimes even sweet treats or raffles. It’s a lively evening filled with laughter, connection, and gratitude for our shared community.
Why Pancakes?
Pancakes are the star of the evening because they use up the very ingredients that many Christians would give up during Lent. This symbolic meal reminds us to enter the Lenten season with joy and a sense of togetherness.
